Dear Bill:

I have been a teacher of immigrant students for more than 25 years. I

often refer to them as "orphans of Empire." I think we should be

hospitable and Good Neighbors, particularly to the young and innocent.

I think it is wrong to call people "illegals" or "enemy aliens" or

"criminal aliens" and we may choose to call them "undocumentend

persons" if we like but "illegal allien" ("alleged illegal alien") is

not a racist term. It is a legal term. The so-called "I word" , if

used properly as you do, is not a derrogatory word equivalent to the

N-word. We should never accuse people falsely of things of which we

have no certain knowledge. But we should not fear to refer to a

class of people by their legal status. Instead we should try to

resolve our problem with immigrantion in a rational and humane way.

Reasonsble people can agree it is a national security question as much

as it is a human rights issue. We solve nothing by the PC demonizing

of opposing points of view.
